KRAV
MAGA FAQs
Q:
I've never participated in any martial arts before.
Is Krav Maga going to be too hard for a beginner?
A: NO! Krav Maga
is based on our natural response to many threatening
situations. For that reason many people find it easier
to learn than some other traditional martial arts. At
KMN, we spend extra time with all of our new students
to ensure a fun and painless introduction to Krav Maga!
Q:
I'm out of shape and am afraid of getting hurt. I should
get fit before I take any classes?
A: ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Our instructors know how to motivate you no matter what
shape you are currently in. Our classes are designed
to be challenging and lots of fun while keeping all
of our students safe.
Q:
Does Krav Maga have a system of belt ranks?
A: Yes. Like many
martial arts, Krav Maga uses a belt testing and ranking
system to acknowledge a student's advancement in the
art. All students begin as white belts and can move
up to yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, and then black
belt. Belts are not emphasized in the system, however,
and students can take advanced training without following
the belt system. The real test is knowing the Krav Maga
techniques well enough to perform them successfully
on the street.
Q:
I have teenagers. These classes are not appropriate
for them?
A: NO WAY! In fact,
Krav Maga is a great way to build a young adult's self-confidence
while improving his/her fitness level and stamina. Our
classes are a great way to stay in shape in between
seasons for sports teams. And learning self-defense
is important at any age.
Q:
I'm not sure I want to sign up for an extended membership.
Can I try a few classes before I commit to a longer
membership?
A: OF COURSE! We
want all of our students to be as enthusiastic about
Krav Maga as we are. Choose between our a special introduction
rate of $40 for a 2 week trial, or a free private lesson
with membership sign-up.

YOUTH
MARTIAL ARTS FAQs
Q:
What exactly is "Youth Martial Arts"?
Are you teaching a real martial art?
A: YES! We focus
on the Korean traditional martial art called Tae Kwon
Do, but we also incorporate boxing, fitness and age-appropriate
self-defense techniques. Because we embrace more than
one martial art, we refer to our program as "Youth
Martial Arts".
Q:
Does Youth Martial Arts have a system of belt ranks?
A: Yes. We use belt
testing and ranking system to acknowledge a student's
advancement in the art. All students begin as white
belts and can move up to yellow, orange, green, blue,
red, and then black belt.
Q:
KMN just started up. Do you have any real experience
teaching children?
A: YES! Our thriving
Youth Martial Arts program has been a popular fixture
with Nantucket kids since 2000 but we have been teaching
children martial arts since 1998. Get your kids away
from TV, computers and video games and watch their confidence
soar!
Q:
I'm concerned that all of this punching and kicking
is inappropriate for children. Won't it make my child
"violent"?
A: NO! In fact,
many doctors actually prescribe martial arts for kids
precisely because it gives them a healthy outlet to
express themselves. Additionally, children gain RESPECT
for their teachers, their classmates and themselves
and experience a boost in self-esteem-- all thanks to
their participation in martial arts. We believe in developing
"strong minds and strong bodies" in all of
our students.
Q:
I want to be able to watch my child while he/she takes
class. Is there an area where I can observe the class?
A: YES! We welcome
you to watch your children train so you can see the
benefits of our mixed martial arts program first hand.
Q:
My children are interested in taking your martial arts
classes, but I'm afraid they won't like them. Can they
try a few classes before we commit to a longer membership?
A: OF COURSE! We
want all of our students to be as enthusiastic about
Youth Martial Arts as we are. Currently we are offering
one free class to any child who wants to try our program.

GRAPPLING
FAQs
Q:
Aren't Grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the same thing?
A: NOT EXACTLY.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art that
has it's roots in Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo. Our Grappling
classes use aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as
wrestling and Krav Maga's approach to ground fighting.
Q: Can
you explain the difference between Grappling and Krav
Maga?
A: SURE! Grappling
takes place on the ground while Krav Maga is primarily
a "stand-up" martial art. Additionally, Grappling
focuses on groundwork and the submission of one's opponent.
Also, unlike Krav Maga, grappling doesn't allow the
use of punches or kicks in practice.
Q:
I've never participated in any martial arts before.
Is Grappling going to be too hard for a beginner?
A: NO! By its very
nature, Grappling is a one-on-one sport so we are able
to pace each class to best meet the needs of every student.
Q:
I'm out of shape and am afraid of getting hurt. I should
get fit before I take any classes?
A: ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Our instructors know how to motivate you no matter what

to be challenging and lots of fun while keeping all
of our students safe.
Q:
Does your Grappling program use a system of belt ranks?
A: NO. We are just
a Grappling club and do not currently use a system of
belt ranks.
Q:
